Ñîçäàâàëàñü â êà÷åñòâå áîåâîé ìàøèíû ïîääåðæêè ïåõîòû – øòóðìîâîãî îðóäèÿ. Áàçîé ñëóæèëî øàññè òàíêà Pz. Kpfw III. Ïîñëå âîîðóæåíèÿ â 1942 ãîäó äëèííîñòâîëüíîé ïóøêîé ñòàëà, ïî ñóùåñòâó, îñíîâíûì ïðîòèâîòàíêîâûì ñðåäñòâîì Âåðìàõòà, à ôóíêöèè øòóðìîâîãî îðóäèÿ ïåðåäàëè øòóðìîâîé ãàóáèöå StuH 42, ñîçäàííîé íà òîé æåáàçå. Ñ ôåâðàëÿ 1940 ïî àïðåëü 1945 ãîäà çàâîäû ôèðì Alkett è MIAG âûïóñòèëè áîëåå 10500 øòóðìîâûõ îðóäèé Stug. III è øòóðìîâûõ ãàóáèö StuH 42. Stug. III âûïóñêàëîñü â ñëåäóþùèõ ìîäèôèêàöèÿõ: A, B, C, D, E, F, 40 F8, 40 G è ãàóáèöà StuH 42. Stug. IV – ðåçóëüòàò óäà÷íîé êîìïèëÿöèè áðîíåâîé ðóáêè Stug. III è øàññè òàíêà Pz. Kpfw IV. Ñ äåêàáðÿ 1943 ïî ìàðò 1945 ãîäà ôèðìà Krupp èçãîòîâèëà 1170 ìàøèí.  íà÷àëå ìàðòà 1945 ãîäà â âîéñêàõ áûëî 564 òàêèõ ìàøèí. Stug. IV âûïóñêàëîñü â åäèíñòâåííîé ñåðèéíîé ìîäèôèêàöèè. |
